Overwhelming Vote Caps Spirited Organizing Drive
July 27, 2001
(Washington, D.C.) - Frontier Airlines
mechanics have voted to join the
International Brotherhood of Teamsters,
with 142 out of 233 eligible voters
marking their ballots for union
representation. Frontier, whose hub is
at Denver International Airport, is one
of the nation's fastest growing, most
profitable regional carriers. Frontier
mechanics, who will become members of
Denver Teamsters Local 961, voted
Teamster seeking their fair share of the
profits their hard work has generated,
and a contract that protects them from
arbitrary, ever-changing work rules.
"Frontier mechanics have already
shown why Teamsters are proud to add
them to our roster," said Teamsters
Airline Division Director Ray Benning.
"They knew what they wanted and
they went out and got it. They came to
us saying 'There are rules at Frontier,
but nothing is ever written down. We
need a contract. We need something we
can rely on that's legal and binding.'
That's Teamsters spirit."
The National Mediation Board (NMB),
the federal agency that oversees labor
relations in the aviation industry
supervised a mail-in ballot election.
Ballots were mailed to the Frontier
mechanics and related employees on June
29th. Votes were counted today and the
Teamsters latest organizing victory
announced.
Local 961 intends to help Frontier
Teamsters get to the bargaining table as
soon as possible.
"The Teamsters Union has local
representation, experienced in
negotiating and servicing airline
contracts," said Teamsters Local
961 President Douglas Whetstine.
"The Teamsters Union has a strong
financial base, a strong International
and the backing of over 1.4 million
members. It is this diversity that gives
us our strength. With hard work and
strong support, together we can get an
excellent contract for you."
Founded in 1903, the International
Brotherhood of Teamsters represents
hardworking men and women throughout the
United States and Canada.
