Local 714 Wins First Contract for Interstate Steel Workers

June 9, 2005

On May 24, workers at Interstate Steel in Des Plaines, Illinois approved their first contract with the company. The 42 workers won the new three-year agreement after joining Local 714 in Berwyn, Illinois seven months ago.

Steel warehouse crane operators, leader operators, forklift operators, maintenance, warehousemen and other related workers make up the bargaining unit.

“These workers wanted better and stronger representation,” said Gino Rodriguez, Local 714 Vice President. “Not only did they want to maintain the benefits they enjoyed before the contract, they needed a stronger voice.”

Highlights of the contract include:

  • $1.45 wage increase annually over the next three years;

  • A wash-up period at end of shift; and

  • Other improved benefits.

“Everyone was pleased with the outcome of this contract,” said Robert A. Hogan, Local 714 Secretary-Treasurer. “We wanted to make sure the workers got the contract they deserved.”
