Fred Zuckerman Ushers In New Era for Carhaulers
May 27, 2005
(Washington, D.C.) – Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa today named Fred
Zuckerman, President of Local 89 in Louisville, Kentucky, as Director of the
Carhaul Division. The Carhaul Division consists of over 80 local unions
representing 12,000 workers that transport automobiles and trucks across the
North America.
“Fred has done a tremendous job representing the members of Local 89 and
fighting for all Teamsters,” Hoffa said. “As a member of the negotiating
committee for the last carhaul contract, he played an integral role in achieving
the wages and benefits our members deserve.”
Under Zuckerman’s stewardship, Local 89 members have worked tirelessly to
further the International Union’s push for pension protection legislation.
Zuckerman has pioneered efforts to increase the local union’s organizing
capacity and is working closely with the International’s Organizing Department’s
to bring in new members. Most recently, workers at Caesar’s Indiana Riverboat
Casino and Hotel and Renaissance Mark Inc. joined the local union. Local 89
currently represents nearly 15,000 workers in a cross-section of the Kentucky
workforce, including UPS, freight, carhaul and other industries.
“I am committed to continuing the Teamster legacy of excellence and
professionalism that sets the gold standard in this industry,” Zuckerman said.
“I will continue our efforts to organize new carhaul drivers and help them
achieve the middle-class American dream that all workers deserve.”
Zuckerman replaces C.B. “Doc” Conder who retired after serving as Carhaul
director for more than six years. Zuckerman’s appointment is effective July 1,
2005.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more
