Pennsylvania Public Works Employees Join Local 773

Workers Seek Better Benefits, Working Conditions

July 24, 2006

On July 11, public works employees in West Penn Township, Pennsylvania voted unanimously to join Local 773 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The new Teamsters work primarily with maintaining the roads and parks in the township.

The main issues leading to the union vote were poor benefits and working conditions.

“Since the township board members switched in January, the benefits haven’t been stable and the work rules have changed on a daily basis,” said Robbie Best, a business agent with Local 773. “The wages were also substandard and we needed to get everything in writing to protect these five workers.”

By the end of this month, Local 773 will set out to work on a new contract.
