
Panel Discusses Wal-Mart’s Impact on America

On September 26, Local 264 in Buffalo, New York held a
special program titled, “Wal-Mart: Its Impact on Our Living Standards.”
The program included a viewing of the recent documentary,
“Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price,” which takes viewers into the lives of
individuals and families struggling against the giant retailer.
The program also included a panel discussion on Wal-Mart’s
detrimental effects on the American economy. The panel included representatives
of Local 264, the Coalition for Economic Justice and the United Food and
Commercial Workers (UFCW). Kate O’Connor, Wal-Mart Project Coordinator for the
Warehouse Division, also served on the panel. The discussion focused on the
success of web sites that counter Wal-Mart in the western New York region.
The event, which was open to the public, attracted more than
45 people, mostly members of the locals of Joint Council 46 and the UFCW. The
program was taped for broadcast on WHLD, an Air America radio outlet. |
