US Airways CSA Hotline Update: November 14

Proposals Presented to US Airways, Support PSA Airlines Teamsters

November 14, 2006

Delegates from the Airline Customer Service Employee Association, IBT-CWA, which represents customer service agents at the merged US Airways, met earlier this month in Charlotte, North Carolina.

At the meeting, leadership of the association was passed to Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa, who will serve as director for the coming year, with CWA President Larry Cohen as vice-director. Clacy Griswold, International Representative for the Teamsters Airline Division, conducted the meetings in Charlotte, during which association members discussed issues pertinent to CSAs, and presented proposals to US Airways' management, which is considering the association's ideas.

In meetings with the CWA, topics included:

  • Finalizing a proposal for US Airways management concerning a system to more easily ensure flexible scheduling, increased trading/swaps and the equalization of overtime;

  • How mandatory overtime is being misused due to understaffing;

  • Cases pending arbitration, pay date seniority issues where adjustments have taken place due to furlough and issues of vacation bidding;

  • Coverage problems in seamless service cities, due to training and travel requirements; and

  • Creation of a logo and pin for association members.

In meetings with US Airways management, the association proposed changes to overtime distribution, flexible scheduling and trading/swaps. We will report back as soon as we have further developments in this area.

Support Teamsters at PSA Airlines

One other important and timely topic was a request that the US Airways CSAs support fellow Customer Service and Ramp Agents at PSA Airlines.

A wholly owned subsidiary of US Airways, Pittsburgh-based PSA is an important part of the seamless service provided to US Airways customers. These fellow workers, some of whom earn hourly wages as low as $6.27, have fought for the last four years to improve their contract.

They deserve our support. Please talk to your shop steward and check www.teamster.org later in the week to sign a call for justice that will be delivered to US Airways and PSA on November 20.

Union Dues/Service Fees

On the issue of union dues/service fees, while our agreement with US Airways management states that half of each month's dues will be deducted from each paycheck and rounded to the penny, the company erred by taking all dues out of the first paycheck in October and rounding this to the dollar.

The company agreed that it made a mistake and that this deduction will be properly handled in the future. We also believe the company should agree to reduce the deduction for the November dues to resolve the over deduction. We will let you know if we are able to reach agreement on this or if locals will each need to issue checks to correct the over charge.

The company also failed to cease deductions for CSAs who changed to Teamster members from the CWA and did not change the coding on the deduction on the paychecks, so your paycheck indicated that the deduction was for the CWA though the dues/service fees were sent to the Teamsters. We are seeking for this to be corrected in November.
