Teamsters Standing United Against Company’s Low-Road
Tactics
March 13, 2006
(Stratford, Connecticut) – Teamsters Local 1150 presented a
good-faith, comprehensive contract proposal today to the federal mediator that
was intended to serve as the basis for a fair compromise to get the 3,600
striking Sikorsky workers back to work.
However, Sikorsky Aircraft immediately rejected this
reasonable compromise out of hand, choosing instead to take the low road by
issuing a warmed-over version of the company’s original proposal that the
Teamsters overwhelmingly rejected in favor of a strike.
The company’s sham proposal fails to address the reason its
workers are on striketheir health care benefits are being slashed. Sikorsky’s
unreasonable demands on health care ultimately will result in pay cuts for its
lower-paid workers.
The union stands ready to negotiate a fair contract that
rewards Sikorsky workers for their hard work, yet reflects the reality of
increased health care costs in the United States.
Sikorsky’s games, intended to divide Teamsters standing
united against an increasingly desperate company, show once again the lack of
regard it has for its workers, for their communities and for elected officials
that have urged the company to return to the bargaining table in good faith.
