Mingo County Workers Seek Strong Representation
June 25, 2007
To date, some 100 blue-collar, clerical and paraprofessional
workers at Mingo County School District, based in Williamson, West Virginia,
have joined Local 505, located in Huntington, West Virginia.
“The workers weren’t getting the representation they
deserved,” said Dennis “Midget” Morgan, Local 505 President. “A couple of them
happened to meet and speak with our members, who told them, ‘You need to join
the Teamsters!’ The first person in touch with us said he had been raised union
and that he knew the Teamsters’ reputation for representing its members.”
The workers, who have signed cards indicating their wish to
join Local 505, include bus drivers, bus aides, cooks, maintenance workers, bus
mechanics, secretaries, bookkeepers, teacher aides, and library/technical
assistants.
“This is our first group of public school employees and
we’re real excited to have them in our union,” Morgan said. “By the strong
support already demonstrated by these new members, I’m convinced that together
we can become a force in improving our members’ lives.”
Under West Virginia law, public employees cannot sign a
labor contract, but they can join a union and elect to have their dues
automatically deducted from their paycheck.
“Our state law provides a grievance and arbitration
procedure for any violation of rules a worker experiences on the workplace,”
Morgan said. “We look forward to ensuring our new members’ rights are upheld and
providing them with strong representation for years to come.”
