Workers Seek Fair Pay, Consistent Work Rules
July 16, 2007
On July 13, Local 25 broke new ground when mechanics at
Zipcar, the world’s largest and fastest growing car-sharing service, voted
unanimously to join the Boston-based local.
“This is the first organizing victory at Zipcar and
hopefully there will be many more victories at this company nationwide,” said
Sean M. O’Brien, President of Local 25. “We’re happy to welcome these new
members, who ride around the Boston area on bicycles repairing, maintaining and
arranging the delivery of Zipcar vehicles. We will sit down with the mechanics
to address their concerns in a strong first contract.”
The college-educated workers have a passion for their job,
providing quality service to hundreds of customers in the Boston area.
“These workers are seeking fair pay and consistent work
rules,” O’Brien said. “A main reason they sought representation from Local 25 is
the diversity of Local 25’s membership and the fact that all our members stand
united for justice in the workplace.”
The workers voted 5-0 to join Local 25. There are six
workers in the bargaining unit.
Zipcar has more than 100,000 customers and 3,000 vehicles in
major metropolitan areas and college campuses, including Toronto, Vancouver,
Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and London, England.
