Earlier this month, 13 workers
at the Great Lakes Power Vac LLC facility in Milwaukee recently voted in favor
of joining Local 200 by a 10-3 margin.
The workers provide high performance
industrial vacuum services to manufacturing, water/waste water, utility, municipal, rail
and roofing companies in the Midwest.
Tom Benvenuto and Mike Gurich,
who are construction business agents for Local 200, and Werner Holzwarth, an
organizer for the local, were very instrumental in this successful organizing
campaign.
Shortly after the workers
became Teamsters, they ratified a contract Benvenuto and Gurich had negotiated on
their behalf that provides a strong, comprehensive package never offered before
at the company.
The new agreement offers
first-time benefits, including:
-
A $2.60-per-hour pay hike upon ratification of
the contract;
-
Annual 3 percent wage increases;
-
Mandatory overtime payTime and a half after
eight hours, and double-time on Sundays and holidays;
-
Health care;
-
401(k);
-
Paid sick days;
-
Bereavement leave;
-
Increased job-related travel expenses and per
diem rates; and
-
Protective shoe allowance.
Tom Millonzi, the
Milwaukee-based local’s Secretary-Treasurer, credits the hard work and the
efforts by the members, who came in after their physically grueling workday to
get their first union contract completed.
“The workers’ determination and
cohesiveness sent a strong message to the company, which helped make both the
organizing drive and contract negotiations process go quite smoothly,” Benvenuto
said. “With this new contract, our members can now earn a better
living for their families and plan for a brighter future.”
