By a majority vote, employees at Pepsi’s bottling
company in Omaha have voted to keep Teamsters as their bargaining
representatives. Teamsters have represented Pepsi employees in Omaha for
nearly 60 years. But, for the past several months, the company tried to
convince employees that they didn’t need a union contract.
“Pepsi made some empty promises to our members,” said
Jim Sheard, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 554 in Omaha. “However, we had just
negotiated a strong, four-year contract at this facility.”
“The new contract had just been ratified by a strong
majority,” said Scott Utech, a business agent at Local 554. “Plus, the
company had a bunch of late promises, and our members knew a union-busting
tactic when they heard it. With the corporate climate today, everyone knows
how important it is to have a Teamster contract to protect their wages and
benefits.”
