Teamsters Mediation Pilot Will Aid Denver Public Employees

April 3, 2008

For the first time, Denver city and county employees with pending discipline or dismissal charges will be able to receive free assistance from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in an attempt to resolve cases. The mediation pilot is scheduled to begin later this month.

“The union-initiated program requires that an impartial mediator from the FMCS be included in the employee appeals process in advance of a case being set for hearing before the Denver Career Services Authority,” said Mike Simeone, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 17.

Ed Bagwell, Business Agent for Local 17 and the program’s chief architect, hailed the program as “a huge step forward in the labor-management relationship in Denver.”

The 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 220,000 public and professional employees throughout North America.
