Indiana Convoy for Change Kicks Off

May 1, 2008

General President Jim Hoffa kicked off the Teamsters Working Class Convoy for Change at a UPS facility in Gary, Indiana this morning.

"We are here to change America," Hoffa told more than 150 members of Teamsters Local 710. "This election is about your future. This election is about gas prices and food prices and health care and retirement security."

Hoffa then addressed a rally of more than 200 Teamsters at Local Union 142 in Gary. He was joined by several elected officials, including the Mayor of Gary.

"We have an opportunity that comes just once in a generation," Hoffa told the cheering crowd. "Now is our time to be heard."

Hoffa urged the crowd to hold candidates accountable for their votes on unfair trade agreements that have decimated the Indiana steel and automotive industries. "First it was NAFTA, then CAFTA and we got the shafta."

The Teamsters Working Class Convoy for Change now heads to Ft. Wayne.

The Convoy includes four tractor-trailers from Teamsters Joint Council 25, Teamsters Local Union 325, two from Teamsters Local 135 and a van from Teamsters Local 703.
