Third Contract Builds on Gains of Previous Two
May 9, 2008
At Allied Waste facilities in Wheeling, West
Virginia, members of Local 697 unanimously endorsed a new, three-year
contract that boosts wages, offsets health-care costs, and secures
overtime and seniority rights.
“All in all, I think we did well,” said Phil
Shearer, a mechanic and shop steward. “We met the needs of our coworkers
and didn’t have to strike. I believe they were happy with the wages,
which are higher than the cost of living.”
“I think it’s a great contract,” said Rick E.
Bauer, President of Wheeling-based Local 697. “They receive substantial
increases we were afraid they weren’t going to get this time, plus they
maintained their benefit level. They didn’t lose anything and it was all
gains.”
Covering approximately 40 drivers, helpers,
mechanics and landfill operators at the company’s landfill and truck
yard, the contract secures potential $600 annual safety bonuses, and
monthly $175 bonuses to offset health care costs. The contract was
ratified in March.
“If you’re on time, show up to work, don’t miss any
work, don’t leave early, you get the bonus,” Shearer said. “It’s a
win-win for both sides.”
“The company wanted to eliminate overtime after
eight hours and over 40 hours,” said Jake Vdovjak, Local 697
Secretary-Treasurer. “We fought them on that to ensure overtime is
secure. Holidays and one vacation during the week do not reduce that
requirement. I think that over time, as Teamsters, we’ve made a big
difference at Allied Waste. Wages have risen substantially, and we keep
improving with each contract.”
