Five Current, Former Members Win Wages, Benefits
They Had Been Denied
May 12, 2008
Thanks to the efforts of Local 813 in Long Island
City, New York, former and current members of the local have received
the last installment of a back-pay settlement totaling about $600,000.
“The company in question, Chinatown Carting
Corporation, had employed the five workers without allowing them
membership into Local 813 and thus were not paying them their full wage
rate or benefits,” said Sylvester Needham, Local 813 President. “We are
vigilant in our efforts to prevent employers from getting away with
paying substandard wages and benefits and denying the employees their
right to be Teamsters.”
In late February, after failing to pay the last
installment of about $300,000, the company finally agreed to do so after
the case proceeded in court.
“We are pleased that the company has finally agreed
to pay these workers what they are owed,” Needham said. “We did not quit
until justice was served in this case and we want to put other employers
in New York City on notice that we will continue to be vigilant to make
sure workers don’t get treated unfairly. This also boosts our benefit
funds, so this helps all of our Local 813 Teamsters.”
