December 9, 2004
(Orange, Calif.) – Paratransit drivers in Orange County, California will now be represented by Teamsters Local 952 through a card-check agreement reached today with Laidlaw Transit Services. Workers concerns are health insurance coverage, job security, fairness in the workplace and wages. Compared with other area transit and paratransit drivers, these workers are paid considerably less. Workers also pay as much as $500 in health insurance premiums monthly for family coverage. “We look forward to negotiating a strong contract that addresses their concerns,” said Patrick Kelly, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 952 in Orange, California. This historic agreement includes a provision to negotiate a collective-bargaining agreement prior to February 14, 2005 and includes an interim grievance procedure to protect employees’ rights. The Laidlaw drivers provide transportation to senior citizens and people with disabilities in Orange County. Laidlaw contracts with the Orange County Transportation Authority, whose other drivers are already under contract with the Teamsters. Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women throughout the United States and Canada.
