Drive Up Standards

Delegates and guests celebrated one of the union’s most successful campaigns at the Teamsters 29th International Convention.

Since launching the Drive Up Standards campaign in 2006, the union-wide effort to raise industry standards in the school bus industry has become a model for its success in organizing workers on a monumental scale.

Rick Middleton, head of the union’s Drive Up Standards campaign, told delegates and guests and when the campaign started in 2006, the union represented about 4,000 members in the industry.

“We now have 46,000 bus operators nationwide,” he said. “We have grown tenfold in 10 years…The school bus industry is now a Teamster industry.”
