Emery/Menlo Pact Ratified

Case Involved Unfair Treatment

December 22, 2003

Workers at Emery/Menlo Worldwide in San Jose, California, voted overwhelmingly, 48-10, yesterday to ratify a contract that restores jobs to many of the company’s fired workers and sizeable severance benefits to those who don’t return.

The agreement was reached after workers went on strike in November to protest the termination of some 40 workers eight months earlier and management’s intention to close the facility. The company had also shifted work to non-union operations in violation of the existing contract.

“Emery/Menlo workers have been through a tough year, but by hanging together, they forced their bosses to rehire union members and do right by those who choose alternative employment with a severance packaged valued at $1.7 million,” said Teamsters Western Region Vice President Chuck Mack, who negotiated the pact.
