Gary Stewards Attend Grievance Training

Stewards in the Gary, Indiana area turned out for their final 2009 training seminar on October 25 at Local 142. The local provides training programs on a quarterly basis for all of their stewards.

More than 40 stewards showed up for the Stewards Council meeting and participated in a workshop that focused on the review of a grievance case and the presentation of the case to management.

“It was great to see the stewards practice the training that they received throughout the year,” said Teamsters Local 142 Steward Council President Harvey Jackson. “The case they worked on was very detailed and allowed for a full discussion on the some of the issues that arise when presenting a case to the employer.”

The case study was developed by the Teamsters Training and Development Department and is part of its ongoing mission to expand and broaden training for stewards.

Local 142 has held these trainings four times a year for several years and is one of the most proactive locals in making sure their stewards have the necessary skill sets to effectively represent their members.

“I’m proud of this group of stewards,” said Jackson. “They really want to make sure that they are doing the best possible job in representing this local union. That’s evidenced by their attendance at these trainings.”
