Hoffa Grants Strike Relief for Grocery Drivers, Warehouse Workers
December 5, 2003
(Washington, D.C.) – International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa today announced that nearly 7,000 Teamsters drivers and warehouse workers honoring UFCW picket lines in Southern California would receive a weekly strike assistance benefit. “These workers have made continual sacrifices to support their UFCW brothers and sisters,” Hoffa said. “They have given up their health care and their wages in this fight. Today, we are standing with these brave men and women and providing a strike assistance benefit to help them during this most difficult time.” The union’s General Executive Board unanimously voted to provide the $200.00 per week benefit during quarterly meetings in Washington this week. The checks will be distributed to workers throughout Southern California next week. The benefit will cost the International Union nearly $1.4 million per week. “These corporations must understand our commitment to our brothers and sisters on strike,” Hoffa added. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women throughout North America.
