Hoffa Hails Courageous Teamsters, Pledges Continued Support for UFCW Grocery Strikers

December 19, 2003

The Teamsters leadership is filled with pride at the courage of our Teamster brothers and sisters who courageously walked off their jobs in support of the 70,000 brave UFCW grocery workers who are on strike in Southern California.

In an age when the corporate creed of every man and woman for himself or herself is dominant, it is truly historic for a group of workers with no immediate stake in a particular struggle to take a stand and sacrifice as much as our 8,000 California Teamster brothers and sisters have.

While the UFCW has made a tactical shift in removing the pickets at grocery warehouses as a sign of good faith in the negotiation process, the Teamsters Union pledges its full support of their struggle. Teamster Local Unions will continue to honor the picket lines at the retail grocery stores in Southern California, as we reinforce the UFCW’s call for an end to the lockout at Albertsons and Krogers.

Together, the UFCW and the Teamsters, united with the rest of labor, will win this battle for decent health care for working families.
