Hoffa Statement on Airline Security Bill Signing
November 19, 2001
The safety of our airline and airport workers and the passengers that they serve is absolutely paramount. Consequently, I am pleased that the federal government will finally move forward on strengthening their security. The compromise bill contains many of the remedies that I suggested when I testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in September. Our union's efforts to achieve a strong bill paid off. This legislation is an important first step, and a major victory for the more than 100,000 Teamsters whose personal safety is directly compromised by the industry's porous security net. The Teamsters Airline Division will continue to work with the various committees covering the Transportation Department's Rapid Response Team and Airport Security Team, while ensuring that workers' concerns are both heard and addressed.
