International Brotherhood of Teamsters’ Commitment to Helping Members and Communities in Need Through the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund

WHEREAS, the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund is a charitable 501 (c)(3) fund established in 1991 to assist victims of natural disasters long after the media has forgotten; and

WHEREAS, the fund receives donations from local unions and their affiliates; and

WHEREAS, collections from the fund may not be distributed to specific disaster areas until those areas have been declared disaster zones by the federal government; and

WHEREAS, dollars from this fund go toward the rescue of disaster victims and the clean-up and rebuilding of communities devastated by disasters; and

WHEREAS, the International Union has always encouraged officers, members, locals and Joint Councils to donate to the fund when disasters strike; and

WHEREAS, through this fund, the International Union has been able to assist victims of disasters including Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti earthquake, the Joplin Tornado and other disasters including floods, wild fires, and storms; and

WHEREAS, the International Union is committed to continuing to assist victims of natural disasters and encourages members to do the same through the donation of medical supplies, goods, finances or time; and

WHEREAS, the International Union believes in helping those in need when they are at their most vulnerable, regardless of race, religion, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic background;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the International Union will encourage officers, members, locals, and Joint Councils to continue donating to the fund so that victims of natural disasters, Teamsters and non-Teamsters alike, will continue receiving help to rebuild their homes and lives after disasters strike.
