Letter to Members of NMDU from Teamster General President Hoffa

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the NMDU:

The Newspaper and Mail Deliverers Union, a proud, independent union established in 1901, is considering affiliating with the Teamsters.  We believe that a united labor movement is a stronger labor movement – and are excited about the opportunity to welcome you into our ranks.

Drivers for newspapers across the country, such as the Chicago Sun Times, the Boston Globe, the Seattle Times, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and others have long been members of the Teamsters Union.

Over the past several years we have had the honor of being the merger partner for three independent unions:  the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes and the Graphic Communications International Union. All three have found increased strength for bargaining, political action and organizing since their merger with us.

For more than 100 years we have been a leader in setting the standard for higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions for our members.   The Teamsters have won many fights over the years, from shorter workdays to individual grievances in the workplace to major legislation in Congress. We win because our members are united to achieve our common goals. Our combined traditions and strengths will help us continue to win dignity, justice and fairness on the job for NMDU members and all of our 1.4 million members.

Fraternally,
James P. Hoffa
Teamsters General President
