Local 14 Stacks the Deck with Trained Stewards

More than 55 stewards attended a one day training program on June 6th, 2009 sponsored by Teamsters Local 14 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Secretary-Treasurer Gary Mauger, President Larry Griffith, Business Agents, and Staff worked with Sally Payne from the IBT Department of Training and Development to create a program tailored to the specific jobs represented by Local 14.

“A large percentage of our membership is in the public sector,” said Dana Phillips, Local 14 Business Agent. “Their procedures can differ greatly from those of private sector members.”

Phillips was co-instructor on the topic of grievance handling with Payne. Two other important segments in the program were presented by Larry Griffith and Steve Harney. Griffith’s session focused on the difficulties of bargaining in tough economic times. Stewards gained a better understanding of the critical role they play in this process.

Harney conducted a workshop on sexual harassment in the workplace. Much of the discussion centered on recognizing and preventing language and situations that can lead to sexual harassment on the job. Stewards learned information that will help them carry out the crucial role they play in preventing harassment.
