On September 12, Local 190 in Billings, Montana, hosted a stewards training seminar in which more than 60 stewards and members participated. The seminar focused on improving communication skills with our members. Bill Munger, Eastern Region Training Coordinator from the Teamsters Department of Training and Development, facilitated the program.
Joe Dwyer, the local’s Secretary-Treasurer, welcomed the participants and thanked them for taking the time to attend.
"We see ongoing education for our stewards as essential for the success of the union,” Dwyer said. “We hope to expand your skills by offering creative programs like our local’s annual Heritage Day as well as a variety of topics that supplement your basic steward training.”
The seminar included a presentation by Jack Peasley from the Teamsters Department of Field and Political Action on the importance of contributing to DRIVE, the Teamsters’ political action committee, and being involved in politics. Peasley also gave an update on the FedEx campaign.
Ted Handel, a commissioner from the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service, focused on concepts and skills that stewards can apply to help resolve conflicts in the workplace.
Munger presented a session on improving communications in the workplace, particularly among members whose ages may span up to four generations. Munger also focused on key elements of effective communication, such as active listening skills.
