Local 20 In Toledo Hosts Three Steward Trainings
Nearly 100 Stewards from Local 20 in Toledo, Ohio participated in an in depth, three part training program in 2009. The training featured a variety of topics including the overall role of the Teamster Steward, issues facing bargaining teams at the negotiating table, and how to present a difficult grievance case to management.
“We work in concert with the Teamsters Training and Development Department to provide the best possible training to our dedicated stewards,” said Teamsters Local 20 LEARN Coordinator Nancy Norman. “Our elected officers’ are committed to providing the tools necessary to aggressively represent our members and this proactive training will help our membership tremendously.”
Two classes were held in February, with one being a mid-week training, and the final year-end training was held on October 10, 2009.
“Teamsters Local 20 has always been at the forefront of conducting strong and effective steward trainings,” said Shawn D. Ellis, Central Region Training Coordinator for the IBT Training and Development Department. “The stewards who attend these trainings are very sharp and motivated. And, they are serious about wanting to acquire more skill sets to effectively represent their members at the worksite.”
The local is already setting up its 2010 training schedule with Saturday, February 20, 2010 slated for the Stewards Training.
Norman is also responsible for scheduling New Member Orientation Meetings throughout the year. “These are very important meetings as we get to educate our new members on the importance of becoming good Teamsters,” said Norman.
