Local 767 Hosts a Three-Day Teamsters Leadership Academy Program on "Arbitration."

Local 767 in Forest Hill, Texas hosted a three-day Teamsters Leadership Academy program on "Arbitration." More than 20 business agents and officers from across the country attended the workshops that were facilitated by the Teamsters Department of Training and Development.

Wesley Jenkins, President of Local 767, coordinated the local’s involvement in the program and made sure all of their business agents and officers were on hand to assist the presenters in any way needed.

"Education and training is essential to being a good labor representative," Jenkins said. "This type of program provides our leaders with the skills to better serve our members. We are pleased to host this TLA."

Sally Payne, Associate Director of Training and Development, and Iliana Flores were very impressed with the support from Local 767 and the facilities provided for the presentations.

"Showcasing Teamster locals is an integral part of mentoring and developing the skills within the Teamsters," Payne said. “The support from the Local staff at 767 was key to the success of this TLA,” Flores said.

The program covered a variety of topics that lead up to and including the arbitration process. Martin Costello, Chief Counsel to the General Secretary-Treasurer, provided an overview of the arbitration process and detailed the do’s and don’ts, theory development of the case, case preparation and facilitated one of the three mock arbitrations that allowed participants to put what they learned through lecture and discussion into practical use.

"The instruction session was extremely helpful because it provided many useful strategic and tactical tools," said Kari Seime, a business agent for Local 320. "I enjoyed this very informative training session."

William "Bill" Baab, Esq. and Yona Rozen, Esq., counselors to Teamster Locals throughout the region, were the arbitrators in the two additional mock arbitrations. Additionally, Bill Baab spoke on the topics of evidence and argument and their relevance in an arbitration case.
