In Memoriam: Anna Louise Sprague

Sprague Worked as Executive Secretary to Six General Presidents

Anna Louise Sprague, who worked as executive secretary to six Teamster General Presidents, passed away on October 14, 2009 in Solomons, Md. She was 85.

“Anna Sprague helped keep our union running for 37 years as the executive secretary for some of our nation’s most powerful labor leaders, including my father, James R. Hoffa,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President.

Sprague was born in 1924 in Rixford, Pa. and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1942. She worked for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1955 until 1992, from James R. Hoffa through William J. McCarthy.

“She was an extraordinary person. Everyone here loved her and she loved everyone, and she would go out of her way to help those in any kind of need,” said Norma Bartus, Assistant Director of the Industrial Trades Division.
