New York Dairy Members Win $30,000 in Back Pay

Victory Comes on Heels of First Contract

February 11, 2003

Nine dairy members of Teamsters Local 522 in Jamaica, New York got their jobs back and received more than $30,000 in back pay under a settlement reached with the company.

The case began when Local 522 sought representation of full-time and regular part-time drivers at S.K.S. Enterprises, Inc., in Garden City Park, New York. During its negotiating campaign, the nine employees were denied their right to work by the employer.

The union brought the case to the National Labor Relations Board in mid-2002. Following an investigation, the NLRB issued a complaint against the company and directed that a hearing be held.

Prior to the hearing, the employer agreed to pay more than $30,000 to the nine workers.

“We are pleased that these employees received the wages they were due for being denied the right to work,” said Robert Moore, Local 522 Secretary-Treasurer. “This victory comes on the heels of the completion of the initial collective bargaining agreement between Local 522 and the employer.”
