Ohio Citizens Get Green Light To Collect Signatures Against S.B. 5
Good news: Ohio officials today gave the go-ahead for S.B. 5 opponents to collect signatures to put the repealing of the law on the November ballot.
Secretary of State Jon Husted certified signatures backing the petition language as valid, and Attorney General Mike DeWine approved a version of the petition language itself.
The shorter, five-page version will be the one put before registered voters. Petitioners have until June 30 to collect approximately 231,149 signatures to have the issue put on the ballot. S.B. 5 is the bill that stripped Ohio workers of their rights to collectively bargain.
Also, a new survey shows strong support for a citizens' veto of S.B. 5. The Wenzel Strategies survey shows 51 percent of Ohio voters favor a repeal of S.B. 5, compared with just 38 percent who said they would vote to keep the new law in place. Another 11 percent were unsure of the question.
But to make sure that there are enough valid signatures to put the measure on the ballot, training sessions are being held all over the state on how to collect signatures.
Brother Fred Crow from Local 436 attended a training session earlier this week in Geauga County, solidly Republican. Fred said there were 60 people at the training.
