Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters Hold Boot Camp

Members Come Out and Get Involved

The Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters recently hosted a two-day Member Organizers Boot Camp in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As part of the big picture to recruit and train 1,000 new volunteer member organizers throughout the country, Paul Cardulo, President of the Pennsylvania Conference, along with its executive board, committed to recruit and organize for the two-day training.

The program was very comprehensive and covered how to deliver the union message effectively and how to bridge the generation gap in order for this message to be heard. Mike Clark, an International Union business representative and member of the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters, covered the topics of organizing and politics, and also talked about how to prepare for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act.

“I learned how to talk to a diverse group of people and how to conduct a proper house call with confidence and knowledge,” said Stacy Sholly, who is currently organizing to join Local 384 and wants to help other workers organize. “I think I will be a much more effective organizer because of all I’ve learned. Everything was outstanding and I appreciate the opportunity to be here.”

“I’m new to organizing and this class taught me how to approach people and tell my story, as well as how to task and motivate them,” said Mary Davis, a member of Local 429.

“Mike Clark’s presentation on the generational values and concerns, and how it’s all relevant when we are trying to organize, was great,” said Chuck White, a member of Local 830.

“I found the guidelines for an effective house call visit very helpful, and as a newly appointed trustee, I found the boot camp very informative. It gave me a great appreciation of how important organizing is,” said Tim Turek, a member and Trustee of Local 776.
