Statement of James P. Hoffa on Resignation of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume
December 2, 2004
On behalf of the Teamsters Union, I would like to express our gratitude to Kweisi Mfume for all his outstanding work as President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). His leadership and passion was an inspiration, and his legacy as a champion for civil rights and civil liberties will not soon be forgotten. Our union worked with Mr. Mfume many times over the course of his tenure through the efforts of the Teamsters National Black Caucus and our Human Rights Commission. We share the same goals as the NAACP, striving to unite blacks and other minorities, and other persons of good will for promoting cultural, civic, legislative, political, educational, fraternal, charitable, welfare, social and other activities which further the interests of minorities. In his nine years as president, Mr. Mfume made invaluable contributions that have created a strong foundation that will serve the NAACP well in the future. His leadership and vision will be missed, but I am sure that he will apply the same devotion he demonstrated leading the NAACP in whatever future endeavors he chooses.
