Teamster Support Propels Pataki to Victory

New York Teamsters Provide Extensive GOTV, Financial and Field Resources

November 6, 2002

(Albany, NY) – New York Teamsters today hailed Tuesday’s election results as proof of their increasing political power. Governor George Pataki was reelected with help from the endorsement and political support of rank-and-file members.

“The Teamsters were determined to make a difference in New York’s elections,” said James P. Hoffa, General President. “When our members chose to give Governor Pataki our endorsement, they also pledged to do whatever it takes to help the campaign win.”

New York candidates at all levels received extensive financial support from the Teamsters’ political action committee, D.R.I.V.E. (Democrat, Republican, Independent, Voter Education). D.R.I.V.E. is funded by voluntary contributions from Teamster members. In addition to financial support the union ran Get Out the Vote (GOTV) operations for all of its members including phone banking, multiple mailings, work site visits and rallies. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters funded more than 300 field operatives across the United States.

“When working families vote, we can make a difference,” Hoffa added. “Our power at the polls is increased as Teamster spouses, sons, daughters and parents vote for our friends. This type of political strength results in building Teamster majorities at all levels of government, regardless of party.”

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women throughout the United States and Canada.
