Teamsters Mourn Loss Of Leader, Brother Dan McKay

Former Joint Council 13 President Instrumental In National Master Freight Agreement Negotiations

The Teamsters Union is saddened to announce the passing of Dan McKay, retired President of Joint Council 13 and Local 600, both in Maryland Heights, Mo. McKay passed away on November 10, 2011, from complications of a stroke. He was 65 years old.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the McKay family and to all those who Dan worked so closely with,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President. “Dan was a champion for the middle class. His leadership, his spirit and his charisma will be deeply missed.”

McKay began his career for the Teamsters more than 30 years ago as a driver in the St. Louis area. In 1996, he was elected Recording Secretary at Local 600 and two years later was elected President of the local. In 2002, McKay was elected President of Joint Council 13. He held both positions until his retirement in 2010.

During his tenure with the Teamsters, McKay sat on the Teamsters Central Region Local Cartage Negotiating Committee for the last five Teamster National Master Freight agreements. He was appointed trustee of the Teamsters National 401(k) Board of Directors and was a co-chairman of the Missouri-Kansas Highway Driver’s Council.

“Dan was a strong leader. If you needed help, he was always there for a fellow union member,” said Marvin Kropp, President of Joint Council 13. “Dan demanded respect for the Teamster membership in this area and he received it.”

“Dan had served our members very well. We deeply regret the passing of a truly outstanding Teamster leader,” said Gordon Sweeton, International Vice President.

McKay is survived by his wife Sharron, sons Daniel McKay Jr. and Mark McKay, and three grandchildren.
