Teamsters Take Fight for Worker Rights To Nation's Largest Anti-Union Law Firm

Hundreds of Union and Civil Rights Supporters Picket Jackson Lewis in Atlanta

December 10, 2003

(Atlanta, GA) – Several hundred Teamsters, civil rights activists, other union members and supporters marched on the downtown Atlanta offices of Jackson Lewis today blowing whistles and chanting “Jackson Lewis tries to screw us, but workers will fight back” and “Jackson Lewis shame on you, shame on you for what you do.” The practice is the largest anti-union, anti-worker law firm in the nation.

“This company is a corporate guru when it comes to violating worker rights,” said Jeff Farmer, Teamsters Organizing Director. “We are here to pull back the curtains and shine the light on Jackson Lewis’ despicable acts against workers.”

The demonstration is part of a series of events taking place across Atlanta today under the banner “Worker Rights are Human Rights.” The AFL-CIO is sponsoring a series of demonstrations nationwide today as part of International Human Rights Day.

The law-firm has a well-documented history of advising its clients on actions that would inhibit workers exercising their right to choose a union. Jackson Lewis literally wrote the book on union-busting. The Teamsters and coalition partners are bringing attention to these efforts to circumvent the National Labor Relations Act—including the use of captive meetings, forced overtime, use of armed guards to stop organizing campaigns and efforts to prohibit communication between workers.

According to Rick Rehberg of the Food and Allied Trades Department of the AFL-CIO in a story by PAI, “Jackson Lewis is a human rights violator. It provides a respectable front for some very dirty practices.”

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women throughout the United States and Canada.
