The mission of the Training and Development Department is to create programs and materials that will build skills and enhance knowledge, as well as foster commitment and dedication within our union. Seminars for members, stewards, business agents, and officers provide the perfect opportunity to build union solidarity, mentor younger members and identify specific concerns of union membership and the labor movement.

On September 26, Joint Council 25 in Chicago held its annual Fall stewards training program, which focused on Weingarten Rights, the proper way of handling contract violations and discipline grievances, and the overall role and responsibility of a Teamster steward.
Nearly 100 Stewards from Local 20 in Toledo, Ohio participated in an in depth, three part training program in 2009. The training featured a variety of topics including the overall role of the Teamster Steward, issues facing bargaining teams at the negotiating table, and how to present a difficult grievance case to management.
Stewards in the Gary, Indiana area turned out for their final 2009 training seminar on October 25 at Local 142. The local provides training programs on a quarterly basis for all of their stewards.
On November 21, Local 26 in Champaign, Illinois hosted a stewards training seminar with more than 30 stewards and members participating in the program.
