Q: What is the status of the merger between Allied Waste and Republic?
A: On November 14, shareholders of both companies voted to approve the merger contingent upon regulatory approval. The U.S. Department of Justice will soon be proposing a consent decree that will likely propose some asset divestitures. The Teamsters Union is still working closely with various attorney generals from different states and other regulatory officials to advocate for the interests of our membership. Depending on how things shake out, this stage of the merger could be complete by mid–December. However, there is still a public comment period and the state attorney generals can still take court actions against the agreement.
Q: Could Waste Management make another offer at this point to buy Republic?
A: Waste Management has announced that it has withdrawn its offer to buy Republic and it is highly unlikely the company will make another offer.
Q: Is my job in jeopardy? What about my Teamster status?
A: We know the companies are looking for a smooth transition, and they know they will have to bargain with the Teamsters over major changes, including any proposed job cuts. However, if the companies attempt to lay off workers or violate the union contract, the union will mobilize the necessary legal and political resources to fight for your jobs and your contract.
Q: Where can I learn more?
A: The Teamsters Solid Waste, Recycling and Related Industries has been involved in the process from the beginning and continues to monitor every development to protect members’ interests. For the latest updates, visit the Teamsters’ web site, www.teamster.org. Be sure to call your local union representatives and let them know of any significant changes taking place.
