Yellow Truck Driver Helps Replace Stolen Presents
December 28, 2007
Mike Gordon, a Local 710 member and Yellow truck driver, was shocked by an early morning WGN news story about the burglary of Sanctuary Family Worship Center in Chicago. Thieves stole hundreds of toys intended for needy children. "I couldn’t believe that someone would do such a rotten thing to these children right before Christmas," Gordon said. "How could the church possibly replace everything? I told my wife we should do something." Gordon reached into his own pocket and bought several boxes full of toys for the church. "My wife, Debra, and I loaded up the car with boxes of dolls and cars and trains," he said. "I don’t know anyone at the church, but people should help people when they have problems. Teamsters always help when they can, and in this situation, I definitely could." Gordon’s generosity didn’t surprise anyone at Local 710, where he has been a member for 23 years. "Mike is always willing to lend a hand," said Mike Sweeney, Local 710 Vice President. "He has been very involved and a strong supporter of Local 710 for more than 20 years." The church, with the help of Gordon and other generous Chicagoans, have collected enough toys to hold the 12th Annual Toy Giveaway this Christmas.
