"In the face of any
national crisis, Teamsters have always rallied to help those in need. It is
the hallmark of our union that we come together in the face of adversity and
tragedy."
—Statement of Teamsters General President James
P. Hoffa and General Secretary-Treasurer C. Thomas Keegel on the Terrorist
Attacks of September 11, 2001
On September 11, 2001, before the dust even began to settle
on the World Trade Center site, New York-area Teamsters and thousands of other
union members descended on lower Manhattan, determined to pitch in on the effort
to clean up following the worst terrorist attack ever to take place on U.S.
soil.
"The hard work, professionalism and selflessness exhibited
by the thousands of men and women members of the Building and Construction
Trades at ground zero was extraordinary,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer
(D-NY). “They are truly the unsung heroes who made possible the monumental
recovery process that was speedy, safe and under-budget. I am sure I speak for
all New Yorkers when I say how proud I am of the work done at Ground Zero by the
members of the Building Trades union community."
On July 4, 2004, Teamster representatives were present at
the ceremony to lay the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower, the structure that
will go up on the World Trade Center site. Teamsters from the Building Material
& Construction Trade Division (BM&CTD), who were integral—along with other union
members—to the clean-up of the site, will also be involved in making sure the
Freedom Tower and adjacent memorial are a fitting tribute to those lives lost on
that tragic day.
This section of our BM&CTD site honors those Building Trades
Teamsters who participated in the clean-up, and provides safety and health
information for all union members who worked at and near the site.
