When I first became a member of the Teamsters,
I was parking cars at age 17 and did that for 13 years. I’ve seen some real
changes in the parking industry over the years but one thing has stayed
constant—this is tough work. When I first started doing this job, I thought it
was the easiest job in the world. But it is not. You’re constantly moving, which
is exhausting. It is also stressful because it is a job that requires a lot of
skill. To be able to back up through a crowded garage and swing it into an
extremely tight spot before hopping out the window of the car and moving on to
the next one—it is not easy.
I have a great deal of respect for the men and women who
work in the parking industry. That is why today I feel privileged to represent
these workers as the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 665 and as the Chairman of the
National Parking Council.
The National Parking Council is an important part of the
Teamsters Industrial Trades Division. It was formed in 1999 to advance and serve
the interests of workers employed in the parking industry. Its related fields
range from cashiers and valet parking attendants to hikers, porters and shuttle
bus drivers. Since it was formed, we have seen the number of Teamsters in the
parking industry triple. I am very proud of the Parking Council’s work. Its
success is due to the contribution of all the local unions that participate in
the Council.
I invite your comments and questions. You may contact the
Council through the Industrial Trades Division at (202) 624-7487 or by mail to
the Industrial Trades Division, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, 25
Louisiana Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001.
Fraternally,
Ernie Yates
Chairman, National Parking Council
