United Airlines mechanics are ready for
their Teamster election! The Teamsters Union has been working in close
partnership with UAL mechanics for several months in order to bring change to
United Airlines. Organizing started two years ago as a grassroots effort by a
group of UAL mechanics who were seeking a change for the better. There is now a
major, nationwide effort by UAL mechanics to gain Teamster representation.
Why are hundreds of UAL mechanics
actively seeking to secure the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as their
future union representative? The Teamsters is a powerful, effective organization
that is 1.4 million members strong. The
Teamsters Airline Division and Teamsters
Aviation Mechanics Coalition are leading the fight against outsourcing and
working toward a secure future for all aviation mechanics. Teamster mechanics
contracts provide for strong scope (job protection) language, solid wages,
benefits and retirement security at 11 carriers, including Continental Airlines,
Frontier Airlines, and UPS.
Please take the time to find out more
about this exciting time for UAL mechanics and what the Teamsters are all about!

What the Teamsters
Offer
The Teamsters have the will, the
expertise, and the vision to effectively represent UAL mechanics.
Strong Contracts in the Aviation
Maintenance Industry:
Teamsters Hold Informational
Meeting for UAL Mechanics
During the two Q&A segments of the
informational meeting held March 1 in San Francisco, Teamsters address questions
about reopening the mechanics' contract with United Airlines and grievance
backlogs. Listen to the Teamsters' solution.
The Issues
Hit hard by the 9/11 tragedies,
bankruptcies, and outsourcing, UAL mechanics, like many other aviation
mechanics, face a struggle to remain in the middle class. The Teamsters are
front and center, bringing attention to mechanic concerns, gaining nationwide
press, calling on Congress, and demanding change for the better in the aviation
industry.
Outsourcing
Teamsters Alarmed by Reports of UAL 747s Grounded Due to Foreign Repair Station
Error
General President Jim Hoffa said he is disturbed by reports that six United
Airlines Boeing 747s were grounded on March 20 because of errors by a foreign
repair station.
Letter from General President Hoffa to the Honorable
Robert A. Sturgell, Acting Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA)
For all UAL mechanics and related who signed petitions to FAA Acting
Administrator Robert A. Sturgell, here is the letter that has been sent as the
next step in our fight to ensure adequate oversight and regulation of outsourced
work.
Newsom, Hoffa Warn United Over Closing Huge SFO Facility
San Francisco Gavin Newsom and Teamsters President James Hoffa called on United
Airlines to stop outsourcing mechanics work and in particular to keep aviation
maintenance jobs in the Bay Area. Other area political leaders joined the event
in a display of political power aimed protecting SFO maintenance base jobs.
Labor, Political Leaders Call on United Airlines to Stop Outsourcing Jobs
On March 5, hundreds of supporters including Teamsters, United Airlines
(UAL) mechanics, Bay Area union members and elected officials joined Teamsters
Union General President Jim Hoffa and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom at a
rally on the steps of City Hall to protest a plan by UAL to outsource nearly
4,500 jobs at its San Francisco International Airport maintenance facility.
Teamsters, Business Travel Coalition
Co-Sponsor Airline Maintenance Outsourcing Summit
Deeply concerned about high risks associated with
outsourcing safety and national security-critical airline maintenance without
the benefit of FAA oversight standards, the Teamsters and the Business Travel
Coalition held a national summit on aircraft maintenance outsourcing on February
11 in Washington, D.C.

All airline mechanics live with the
threat of outsourcing. A mission of the Teamsters Aviation Mechanics Coalition
is to fight this problem in every possible arena. Articles on this issue also

Pensions
As Teamsters, UAL mechanics will have
the opportunity, if they so choose, to join the Western Conference of Teamsters
Pension Trust pension plan for a secure retirement. Articles on this issue also
appear in the newsletters listed below.
Recently, the Teamsters held
a national conference call with representatives from the Western Conference of
Teamsters Pension Trust (WCTPT). An informative presentation and a Q&A session
were held. United Airlines mechanics from across the nation had the opportunity
to call in with questions about securing their retirement with the Teamsters and
get the answers from the experts! Hear the audio from the two sessions.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has researched
and prepared a comprehensive report on the United Airlines Mileage Plus program
and the termination of employee pensions, calling for any profit realized from
the sale of the current divisions of UAL Corp., such as Mileage Plus, to be used
to restore pension liabilities.
Scope
Job protection is critical in the
volatile airline industry. Teamster contracts provide for clear, indisputable
scope language that protects mechanic jobs. Articles on this issue also appear
in the newsletters listed below.
What’s Wrong with
AMFA?
“What isn’t wrong with AMFA”? That’s
what many aviation mechanics (not just at UAL) are asking themselves. From the
suicide strikes at Northwest to grievances put on hold indefinitely at UAL, the
future looks grim for UAL contract negotiations under AMFA in 2009.
The Committee for
Change
The Committee for Change
was formed in 2005 by a group of UAL mechanics. The Committee for Change has
dedicated itself to bring the strong representation of the International
Brotherhood of Teamsters to United Airlines. The Teamsters’ resources,
professionalism and strong negotiating history provide us with the hope of a
rewarding and stable career at United Airlines. We have been joined by the
majority of our fellow mechanics in our efforts to secure our future, and
together we are on track to making this a reality. Learn more about the
committee at
